Tesla says it's on track to produce "more affordable" vehicles in 2025

In brief: Electric cars are expensive – something that's especially true when it comes to Tesla's models. Elon Musk's firm has said for years that it plans to sell a more affordable EV, and it has now repeated claims that it will finally arrive sometime in the first half of 2025.

In the company's third quarter earnings report, Tesla wrote that preparations remain underway for its offering of new vehicles. These include more affordable models, which will begin launching in the first half of next year.

After killing off the entry-level Model 3 Standard Range this month, which had a sticker price of $38,990, the cheapest vehicle Tesla currently sells is the Long Range rear-wheel drive Model 3, priced at $42,490 before subsidies. Engadget notes that the average price of its 2024 models is just over $63,000.

Back in 2020, Tesla announced an upcoming new EV that could cost just $25,000. The lower price was supposedly possible thanks to the use of a modular "unboxed" manufacturing process that would allow Tesla to work on separate sections of the vehicle individually before bringing them together for a final assembly.

Plans for the new car, codenamed NV9 (often referred to as the Model 2), were reportedly abandoned earlier this year so the company could focus on the recently revealed robotaxis. But investors weren't happy, and Musk recommitted to producing more affordable vehicles.

We still don't know if this cheaper Tesla will be a brand-new model; there has been talk of a compact crossover, or something that looks more like a compact Model Y than a hatchback-style Model 3. The EV could also simply be a cheaper version of the Model 3 or a refreshed Model Y.

It appears that Tesla is abandoning its plan to use the unboxed manufacturing process for its new affordable vehicles. The company wrote that it will utilize aspects of the next-generation platform as well as its current platforms and the same manufacturing lines as its current vehicle lineup.

It also sounds as if the new EV, while cheaper, won't have a price tag as low as $25,000. "This approach [to manufacturing] will result in achieving less cost reduction than previously expected but enables us to prudently grow our vehicle volumes in a more capex efficient manner during uncertain times," Tesla wrote, repeating what it said in its Q2 earnings.

I'll believe it if it happens, and I'll look at third party reviews if it does for how terrible a car built on cut-corners will be.
This was something you could say before 2017 when the Model 3 came out, not not anymore… When the Model Y came out, it really showed that Tesla is a great manufacturer. Before that, they did cut corners.
Crazy people still believe what Elon Musk says.

The truth is, Teslas would look like they are cheaper, but in reality the U.S government is putting higher tariffs on the real cheaper EVs coming from overseas to make the Teslas look like a better buy.
You’re saying the Biden administration is propping up Tesla, who they’ve long shown disdain for because they’re non-unionized?

The truth is that ALL cars have increased prices because of inflation. Tesla managed to maintain their prices where they are. And among EVs, Tesla is the only one making money on their vehicles (and a lot of it at that).

The disdain has nothing to do with unions. Democrats dont care about unions, just ask the railroad union how much support they got on their strike.

The disdain comes from Musk buying their speech apparatus and cutting them off from the blue bird propaganda machine. Up until then they couldnt get enough of Musk and his products. Buying twitter set off a switch and now hes the Big Bad (tm).

I dont know why they say Musk cant deliver. Yes the cybertruck was a bit of a misfire, but its stills elling, and the model 3/Y showed he can make somewhat affordable EVs. The fact Tesla is now profitable should speak volumes.

My only problem with Tesla is the interior. Its just utter trash. And now everyone is copying it with touchscreens and other sillyness.

Once I close on my house I can't wait to get an EV and it will likely be a Tesla because of all the FUs he's give everyone I don't like. Investors complained he was alienating customers but he's also attracting customers that used to hate Tesla. I don't think I'll ever replace my truck for work, but I'd love an electric SUV. Honestly, I want Ford to make a plug in hybrid Bronco but I doubt that'll happen.

Now if only we could get those physical buttons back.....

All I am saying that everyone who bought shares in Tesla when Elon started (and kept it) is now a millionaire.
The rest who say that he is a liar and an *****… well, they will say that forever…

Elon is not perfect, he is only human after all, but anyone who cant recognise that he is an expetional genius… is not very clever
