The latest: Apple's entry-level iPhone SE is due for a refresh and according to the latest scuttlebutt, the iPhone SE 4 could arrive sooner than originally anticipated. According to a fresh report from The Information, Apple is preparing for the device to enter mass production in October. If true, that would put it beyond the anticipated September announcement and launch of the iPhone 16 and could push launch back to early 2025.

For reference, the first-gen iPhone SE was announced on March 21, 2016, the second-gen model broke cover on April 15, 2020, and the third-generation iPhone SE was introduced on March 8, 2022. Given the rumored October window for mass production, we could be looking at a similar launch window for the SE 4.

When we last checked in on the iPhone SE 4, the general consensus was that it'd ship running Apple's A16 Bionic from the iPhone 14 Pro family. Updated information suggests the phone may actually pack an A18 chip under the hood, which is expected to debut in the iPhone 16 in a couple of months. Should the latest intelligence prove accurate, that'd be a significant upgrade that would make the iPhone SE 4 even more attractive.

Other rumored iPhone SE 4 features, like the 6.06-inch LTPS OLED display with a 60 Hz refresh rate, Face ID support, and USB-C connectivity, are still said to be on the table. Further goodies are said to include an aluminum chassis, 6 GB to 8 GB of LPDDR5 memory, and a 48-megapixel rear-facing camera. Local storage capacity could top out at up to 512 GB.

As for pricing, most expect the iPhone SE 4 to start at $499 or $549. That's significantly more affordable than flagships from leading manufacturers, but is higher than the $429 starting price of the third-gen model.

For someone seeking a powerful, modern-day smartphone without every possible bell and whistle, the iPhone SE 4 could be a very compelling option - especially now that it's graduated to a larger display.

Now make it in the mini form factor. I want an iPhone Pro in the mini form factor but if it’s gotta be budget phone then fine idc, just give me a mini phone! A real one like the 12/13 mini

12 mini owner here. I will buy a used 13 mini when this 12 mini dies. One handed typing/scrolling directly from my pocket is so nice. My work phone is a 14. Hate the size.

SE owner here. Although the phone is a bit bigger than the mini, the screen is actually a bit shorter due to the large top and bottom bezels, making it easy to use with one hand. Plus you get the physical home button/fingerprint reader, and a full status bar with no notch.

Yeah but the mini gets a larger screen with a physically smaller phone. Plus the screen is OLED vs LCD. Dropping to 6.06in instead of 6.1 is good for a new SE but a far cry from the mini screen size of 5.4in.

Apple will be coming out with a new _____ in the future and it will be better than the previous one. This is all rumor that will end up happening eventually I don't see how it's news.

Prior work phone was iP8, and I was hoping the company would upgrade to SE but alas they went iP14. But I agree, the SE/iP8 form factor was also a great one-handed option. It is too bad both the 3rd gen SE and the iP13 series will probably reach EOL at the same time since they are the same CPU.

Also, having had the chance to daily the iP8 and 12 mini side by side for years, I think I prefer the mini form factor. Yes, less vertical on the iP8 was useful for swipe down at first, but my thumb can reliably swipe down from mini now too. And Face ID really is better than Touch ID, at least in a hot humid climate. Loss of physical home button frankly is unmissed. Notch does not feel weird, guess it allows more screen real estate, so win there.

Not bashing the IP8/SE form factor, just reflecting. I would switch back to the SE form factor if the 4th gen maintained the size but with new hardware and the attendant longer time horizon for iOS updates.

Just hoping Apple resurrects the mini form factor, or barring that that the folding iPhone is a comfortable one-handed option for daily use when collapsed.

Still love my 12 mini... hate the notch though. And after 3 years still miss Touch ID. So, there is no pleasing everyone. Unless Apple just gave us more options, but they won't because small phones are already niche now, and it costs them more money to have so many models and variations. I get it... but it sucks.

The mini version is great for petite ladies, I bought 12 mini for my mom, she is incredibly happy with it. But I would like to see a better camera, like on the pro version

I don't understand spending this kind of money on a phone?

If you're in your 20s, 30s, 40s and 50's, and married and have chilren, there are simply more important things to be spending your hard earned money on! Not to mention, most of you simply do NOT have that kind of money to spend...

Such as your mortage/rent, food, electic bill, car payment (even though you should be purchasing a good used car) etc...

Why not purchase a $49 TLC flip phone, and pay $16.23 (including tax at T-Mobile) per month for unlimited calling and texting to use it? You're spending hundreds of dollars, and some times over a thousand dollars for a Smartphone? And, you pay anywhere from $80 to a $150 to use them! Which is why every Amerian took the bailout from the US Government. You don't have any money, because you spend it like you're billionares!

When you have a family, to support, you have to be the grown ups you claim to be!
