Something to look forward to: In a world where most tech giants are making increasingly larger and usually more expensive phones, it's good to know that Apple isn't giving up on the iPhone SE. Cupertino's smaller, cheaper handset is reportedly getting an update next year that will introduce several features seen in its high-end siblings, including Face ID and the ability to run Apple Intelligence.

The report that an updated iPhone SE is in the works comes from Bloomberg's Apple expert Mark Gurman. He writes that the device, codenamed V59, will be the company's new entry-level model, but it will feature a number of upgrades over the last update: the 2022 iPhone SE (third generation), which offered 5G connectivity as the most notable improvement over the 2nd-gen handset.

Probably the last Apple device to feature a home button

One of the biggest updates in the next iPhone SE will be the removal of the home button, writes Gurman, switching to the now almost ubiquitous edge-to-edge display instead of featuring thick forehead and chin bezels. Not having a Touch ID button almost certainly means the new iPhone SE will join other Apple devices in using Face ID. The device will most closely resemble the iPhone 14, including the notch cutout.

Another first for the iPhone SE series will be the switch from an LCD to an OLED display, though one thing that isn't changing is the number of rear cameras: the fourth-gen model will still have just one.

Gurman expects the next iPhone SE to offer plenty of performance. It will likely be powered by the A18 chip, thereby enabling support for Apple Intelligence, which is currently only available in the iPhone 15 Pro series and iPhone 16.

Apple is also said to be launching new versions of the iPad Air – the company released the new M2 iPad Air this year. It sounds as if they will offer incremental improvements, with most of the upgrades focused on the internals, though Gurman never went into any specifics.

Gurman says that Apple will introduce updated versions of the Magic Keyboard for both the 11-inch and 13-inch versions of the new Air. They will offer some of the features that had been previously introduced on the latest iPad Pro version of the keyboard.

Following with tradition, Apple could announce the devices sometime in March or April next year.

Oh noes!
I have an SE and love it to bits - and one of the reasons I love it is...NO FACE ID as I consider Face ID a security risk and don't want to pay for the extra tech. Furthermore I want nor need an OLED screen and DEFINITELY dón't want Apple Intelligence.
Besides that the low-ish price of the old SE is ab-so-lu-te-ly a selling point for most people that own one - I'm afraid that story's ending. NOT A SMART MOVE, APPLE!
So...my upgrade plan DIED just now. Dunno what to do. I like the ecosystem (and absolutely hated my encounter with *&$#@ Android).
Perhaps I'll ditch the smartphone and stuff my laptop or iPad in my baggie if I want to be able to use the Web on the road...

Let's see what size that SE4 will be. Not interested in phablets that modern phones including all of iPhones current line up are.

Apple doesn't care about what people want, they certainly don't listen to what people want. They seem to think they are the ones to tell its customer what they want.

Sure they're a bunch of vultures there's no denying that (though some do, ha ha).
My point is that virtually turning the SE into one of their "normal" phones would be a bad decision from a commercial point of view. The thing would no longer serve a purpose - canceling it altogether would be the better decision.
I'm hoping they'll release a "true" new SE instead but if that doesn't happen, I can live with my alternative (put my SIM in a feature phone and carry my laptop or iPad in my bag should I want or need to access the Net on the road) - I will need to purchase a "real" camera but that's the plan anyway.
Curious to see how this will unfold..

I know there are a bunch of people who get the SE solely because of the home button… I know my mother is one of them…

Guess these people will have to join the crowd and forego the convenience of having that button… to be fair, it took me almost 2 days to get used to it when I made the upgrade to the iPhone X…

And their multi trillion dollar valuation would point to them being ABSOLUTELY CORRECT in that assumption.

This is such an odd read. You dont have to set up face ID, nor do you need to use Apple Intelligence. Hated OLED I just dont get, it looks SO much better then LCD ever did.

I had an SE. I thought I would love the small size allowing it to be a one-handed device, but, the screen was so small that it broke most webpages for me. Totally killed the experience.
