A hot potato: Recently revealed conversations between Elon Musk and Vladimir Putin raise complex questions about the intersection of business, technology, and international relations. As one of the most influential figures in the tech industry and a key player in US space efforts, Musk's actions and associations worry some observers.

A Wall Street Journal investigation revealed that Elon Musk, the world's wealthiest individual and a key figure in US space endeavors, has had regular discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin since late 2022. These conversations, confirmed through multiple sources, including current and former US, European, and Russian officials, cover various topics, from personal matters to business and geopolitical issues.

One notable talk involved a request from Putin asking Musk to refrain from activating Starlink satellite internet service over Taiwan. The ask was reportedly a favor for Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The request was a somewhat moot gesture since the Taiwanese government imposes limitations on foreign satellite operators and has not authorized Starlink internet service within the country.

The White House considers the discussions sensitive due to Musk's deep business ties with US military and intelligence agencies. Musk has a security clearance and access to some of America's most classified space programs. Musk jokingly acknowledged his security status at a recent campaign event in Pennsylvania.

"I do have a top-secret clearance, but, I'd have to say, like most of the stuff that I'm aware of … the reason they keep it top secret is because it's so boring," Musk said.

Since Russia is one of America's primary adversaries, the conversations are, at best, a bad look, sparking concern in the current Administration, where some officials were startled to learn of the relationship. Musk has humorously responded to the news story on X but hasn't denied the claims.

The revelations have prompted calls for investigation from some quarters. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson responded to the story at the Semafor World Economy Summit.

"If the story is true that there have been multiple conversations between Elon Musk and the president of Russia then I think that would be concerning, particularly for NASA, for the Department of Defense, for some of the intelligence agencies," Nelson said.

White House officials have acknowledged the story but have not commented or confirmed its veracity.

Musk's fascination with Russia dates back to the early days of his space ventures. In 2002, he traveled to Moscow in an attempt to purchase rockets for his fledgling space program. He failed to close the deal, but the trip began Musk's engagement with Russian space technology.

In recent years, Musk has increasingly become involved in geopolitical matters. He has met with various leaders, including Argentina's Javier Milei and former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. He also showed strong support for Ukraine after the Russian invasion in 2022.

Initially, he donated Starlink terminals to provide internet access in areas affected by Russian attacks. However, his stance appeared to shift later that year when he restricted the use of Starlink for offensive Ukraine military operations. This change in position coincided with reported pressure from the Kremlin. A person familiar with the interactions stated that there were "implicit threats against him" from Russia during this period.

In the past year, there have been reports that Russian forces are using Starlink terminals in occupied areas of Ukraine, potentially undermining one of Ukraine's few battlefield advantages. Musk stated that he has no knowledge of terminals being sold directly or indirectly to Russia. He maintains that his companies have done more to undermine Russia than support it. However, the nature and extent of his communications with Putin have become a subject of debate and concern.

Musk is working on US government contracts and has an active security clearance. If anyone else with a clearance had unsanctioned communications with a foreign head of state their clearance would be administratively revoked immediately.
This is what bugs me. Anyone else, they’d be in the dog house, Musk though? Just sorta “yeah we’ll talk about it eventually”.

I find it incredible. Musk has security clearance, defence contracts, huge subsidies and he's talking directly to the head of a hostile foreign government engaged in a hot war against a country the U.S heavily supports militarily. It's a massive security risk.

Putin hates the USA, blames it for Russia's downfall from great power status. He'll do anything to reverse that. Putin wants to subvert American democracy, destroy its influence, supplant the dollar, turn or neuter key American allies. He's paranoid. He is not a real Christian. He is not a real supporter of "traditional values." He's at war with the West. It seems a lot of people still don't understand this.

The influence of big tech companies is running wild, unchecked, and it is unacceptable. This would never have been allowed in the past so why is it tolerated now? Have no doubt, the U.S government has always been reliant on these tech companies for defence and communications. They have always held sway, but never allowed to gain this much influence interfering directly in foreign policy and national security.

It should be a national scandal.

Musk is doing a great disservice to himself with this.
He does not get it, but here how it looks to a normal, neutral, person:
While Putin's men destroy entire cities, kill adults and children, rape and torture,
Elon has discussions with the man who sent those people to do it, regarding how to end this conflict.
I understand how he would think this was a good idea prior to 2022.
But after thousands of war crimes committed by Russians, this is nearing the actions of a madman.
Or maybe, it is just the actions of someone who, like the rest of the very rich people, lives in his bubble.

Musk almost lost his clearance a couple of years ago due to his cannabis usage.

Musk did seriously respond to the news story, he claimed that the story is left-wing propaganda (and obviously he is a big supporter of the right-wing candidate):
More importantly, SpaceX made an official statement regarding the story:
This is what bugs me. Anyone else, they’d be in the dog house, Musk though? Just sorta “yeah we’ll talk about it eventually”.
You're really taking this hearsay as truth?

Oh it’s so ironic that they hammer him for being for free speech at first but once he endorsed Trump, now they are in attack mode of him. Don’t worry guys I’m sure they will “dig” up more. If it’s fake or real it doesn’t matter, it’s political. Everyone should take it all with a grain of salt.

Why is Russia the "enemy?" They aren't communist anymore. China is way more repressive and the left loves them.

Communism might be gone but it has been replaced with a now increasingly extreme anti western philosophy at all levels of the Russian government. They also have state run media prosecuting what they see as an existential war against the U.S led western world. A war fought across all forms of media, the internet and if need be covert action. It's called Active measures and it is not a secret.

They believe they are at war with the West. It has been this way for at least ten years. It has accelerated nearly every year. The problem is, the west doesn't think it is at war, be it a cold war, or anything else. We ignore it, so we're losing. Unless more people wake up.

Russia has been carefully assembling an alliance of anti western powers in various states of outright war and hostility. Be it Syria, Iran, North Korea, China. Forces in Africa. The ties to countries like Venezuela and Cuba have been renewed. Even assets in NATO nations like Hungary or Slovakia have emerged into power and willingly repeat blatant Russian propaganda.

Yet we still have people thinking the world has not changed and there is no threat. All I can say is wake up, we're entering a new era.

Which crimes exactly? What were the charges, and when were the guilty verdicts?
And are you 100% against criminals in government?

If, you don't know (head-buried) what's been going on in this country by the Biden/Harris administration in the past four years, and who's running the corrupt show (Biden's DOJ) in this country, then there's nothing I can say to illuminate things for you. You'll just have to remain ignorant. Cheers :)

Better Musk, than those criminals in the Biden/Harris administration!
I like the nebulous crimes without any definitions of crimes that were committed. They had impeachment hearings in search of a crime and couldn't find any, embarrassed they had to shut down their their inquiry. Its so sad when people regurgitate talking points they can't even support with an intelligent argument.

Came here for the comments and I'm not disappointed. Fortunately the majority of the world doesn't live behind the Iron Curtain that the west lives behind and isn't blind or ignorant.

then there's nothing I can say to illuminate things for you.
Is there a more common response from the MAGA's over the last 9 years than this one?
When their baseless, fact free statements are challenged, this is what we get.
"Well, if you don't know, I can't tell you" The only real fact? They can't tell me.
Because they have nothing. Zero. Like their candidate!!

And note that he completely ignored my question, "And are you 100% against criminals in government"? That one always stings them and they never answer.

Well put. And 100% true.
